Santo Domingo 19/09/05.- Authorities from
the Dominican Republic expect to increase the number of hotel rooms in the
Samaná Peninsula, a major tourist destination in the country, in a medium term.

According to official sources, the Ministry
of Tourism plans to increase the number of rooms by 60 percent by 2008, to
5,500.

There are 3,500 hotel rooms in Samaná at
present, a region that is benefiting from large investments in the tourism
industry.

The Dominican government has also invested
in the new Catey Airport, which will be operational in July 2006, and in the
construction of a waste-treatment plant in the region.

Out of the total number of rooms, some 400
will be built in hotels on Cayo Levantado and Cayacoa, and will generate 1,600
new jobs in the zone.
